Wix vs. Custom Web Design: Which Is Right for Your Bay Area Business?

July 1, 20267 min readBy Ashly — Grow Your Bay Area Business

Almost every Bay Area business owner we talk to has the same question at some point: should I just build this on Wix, or is it worth paying for a custom web design? Both can work. But they solve very different problems, and the wrong choice can quietly cost you leads for years.

What Wix does well. Wix is genuinely impressive for a DIY tool. Templates are polished, the drag-and-drop editor is friendly, and you can have a basic site live in a weekend for under $30/month. For a brand-new side hustle, a pop-up shop, or a business that mostly gets referrals and just needs a digital business card, Wix is often the right answer.

Where Wix starts to hurt. The trade-offs show up once you actually try to grow. Wix templates are shared with thousands of other businesses, so your site looks generic. Page speed on mobile — the single biggest ranking factor for local SEO in 2026 — is consistently slower than a hand-built site. Structured data, custom schema, and technical SEO tweaks are limited to what Wix chooses to expose. And migrating away later means rebuilding from scratch, because Wix sites aren't portable.

What custom web design gives you. A custom-built site is designed around your business, your customers, and the specific searches you want to win in the Bay Area. You get a unique brand look, a fast mobile-first build, full control over on-page SEO and schema, and a CMS you can actually edit without fighting the template. It costs more up front — typically $1,500–$4,500 for a launch-ready small business site, or $199–$399/month on a care plan — but it compounds. Every month of good SEO builds on the last.

The SEO reality for local businesses. If you're competing for searches like 'plumber in the Mission' or 'family dentist Palo Alto', you're up against dozens of other local businesses. In our experience, custom sites consistently out-rank comparable Wix sites in the same neighborhood — not because Wix can't rank at all, but because the small technical and design advantages of a custom build add up. Faster load times, better internal linking, and cleaner schema all push you a few spots up the results page. In local search, a few spots is the difference between the phone ringing and silence.

How to decide. Choose Wix if your budget is tight, you're testing an idea, or your business genuinely doesn't rely on Google search for customers. Choose custom web design if you want to be found by new customers in a specific Bay Area neighborhood, you care about brand perception, or you're planning to invest in SEO and content over the next 12–24 months.

A middle path. If you already have a Wix site that's 'working fine' but not growing, you don't have to rip it out tomorrow. Start by benchmarking your current mobile speed, checking where you rank for the searches that matter, and looking at how many leads the site actually generates each month. Once you have real numbers, the decision usually makes itself.
